The Gibson L5-S is a solid-body electric guitar introduced by Gibson in 1972 as a more compact, solid-body counterpart to its classic hollow-body jazz guitar Gibson L-5.
It shares much of the visual richness and build quality of the L-5: a carved maple body with multi-ply binding, a 5-piece maple neck, ebony fingerboard with block (often abalone) inlays, and the signature “flower-pot” headstock inlay.
the L5-S was Gibson’s attempt to merge the elegance and class of their prestigious archtop line with the practicality and punch of a solid-body — a unique hybrid that, while never overwhelmingly popular, remains cherished by collectors and tone-conscious players.
